Noreen Mills

PRINCIPAL

Ms. Mills has been an integral part of MS442 for over 19 years. During her time at MS442, she has been a teacher, IEP Coordinator, and Assistant Principal while earning a M.A. in Special Education as well as a M.A. in Supervision and Administration. She prides herself on knowing all of her students and understanding who they are as learners. Ms. Mills also loves a good laugh and you can often hear her laughter throughout the hallways.

Mr. James has been an educator at MS442 for ten years. Before becoming Assistant Principal, Mr. James taught science. He is a National Board Certified Teacher and an alumni of the NYC DOE Office of Leadership.

Lisa Genduso

Ms. Genduso received a B.S. in Business Administration and a specialization in Legal and Ethical Studies from Fordham University with a minor in Economics. After two years working as an accountant, she joined the NYC Teaching Fellows and started working at MS442, earning a Masters’ degree in Mathematics Education. In her twelve years at MS442, Ms. Genduso has taught both 7th and 8th grade math and 6th grade problem solving. She is also the chair for the School Leadership Team (SLT). Ms. Genduso can be found cheering for the Duke Blue Devils in her off time.

Nora Green

Ms. Green earned a B.A. in History at Brooklyn College and a M.S. in Special Education at Touro College. She also has 45 graduate level credits in education. At MS442 Ms. Green is an IEP Coordinator and District Representative as well as the Reading Intervention Specialist. Ms. Green has taught every grade and subject at MS442 except art and gym! When not at MS442 Ms. Green is very busy raising her family and is the proud parent of one son and two daughters. The youngest one is an 8th grader! Ms. Green enjoys going to the theater, concerts and reading.

Mr. T is the Physical Education teacher at MS442 as well as a Dean. He has been teaching P.E. for 10 years and was recently honored as the 2016 Teacher of the Year in New Jersey.

Liz Reale

Ms. Reale earned her bachelor's degree in Accounting from the University of Pittsburgh and worked in the accounting field for three years in NYC prior to obtaining her master's degree in Special Education from Dowling College. She's currently working on her second master's degree through LIU Post in Educational Technology. This is Ms. Reale's 6th year teaching at MS442 and she was recently recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator. At MS442, Ms. Reale teaches 6th, 7th & 8th grade Computer Science, is the Technology Focus Leader and coaches the Lady Stingers volleyball team. While not at school, Ms. Reale enjoys playing volleyball, watching movies, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.

Jared Sutton

Mr. Sutton teaches Algebra and Computer Science. He programs the Hive. This is his 6th year at MS442. He enjoys biking, reading and exploring New York. He is from Alabama and went to college at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Mike Colonna

Mr. Colonna has taught at MS442 for the past 18 years. He teaches visual art to 6th, 7th & 8th grade,  as well as runs the Art Portfolio after school program. Before becoming involved in education, Mr. Colonna worked extensively in the Commercial Art, Graphic Design and Advertising Fields as well as as well as silkscreen/t-shirt design. He also completed Cartooning, Comics, Children's Book Illustration projects prior to teaching. Aside from his work experience in the arts, Mr. Colonna performs as a guitarist and has recorded and performed throughout the New York tri-state area. Mr. Colonna holds a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art/Graphic Design with a minor in Cartooning/Illustration, from the School of Visual Arts as well as a Master's Degree in Special and General Education from Touro College and New York University. When he is not teaching, Mr. Colonna spends his time with his family, or is creating either art or music for his own enjoyment, or on a freelance basis.

Melissa Onstad

Ms. Onstad, a California native, earned a B.A. in English and Religious Studies at Whittier College in Southern California. She earned her Master's in Education at Pace University. Before becoming a teacher in 2005, Ms. Onstad was a journalist for 5 years, serving as a reporter and copy editor for a legal newspaper in Los Angeles. When she is not teaching reading and writing, Ms. Onstad enjoys reasing YA lit, cooking, writing poetry and personal essay and spending time with her children. Ms. Onstad is also the co-advisor of the school GSA.

Annamarie Scavarda

Ms. Scavarda earned a B.A in English and a minor in psychology from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. She is certified in special education and general education. This is Ms. Scavarda's second year at MS442 teaching 6th grade ELA with Ms. Onstad. While not at school, Ms. Scavarda enjoys hiking, running, reading, and traveling.

Kyle Nolting

Mr. Nolting graduated from the University of Vermont with a bachelors degree in Environmental Studies and Wildlife Biology. Before joining the NYC Teaching Fellows Program and becoming a teacher, he worked for the Audubon Conservation Society as an environmental educator. This is Mr. Nolting's second year teaching 6th grade science at MS442. Mr. Nolting also assists the theater department for the production of the school play.

This is Ms. Monaco's first year teaching science at MS442. She graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor's degree. This summer, Ms. Monaco started the NYC Teaching Fellows program and is earning her master's degree in education from Long Island University.

Priyanka Katumuluwa

Ms. Katumuluwa earned a B.A. in Psychology and French from New York University, and an M.S. in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Brooklyn College. While at NYU, she studied abroad in both Ghana and Paris, solidifying her fluency in French, and her love of traveling. At MS442, When she's not hanging out in the 6th grade math classroom, Ms. Katumuluwa can be found drawing, biking, reading, or playing board games at the local coffee shop.

Christie Howard

Ms. Howard received her B.A. from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1972. After working as a community organizer for an environmental group, she went to Brooklyn Law School and received her J.D. in 1978. She was admitted to the N.Y.S. Bar in 1979. After working as an attorney, she took some time off to raise her two daughters. She started teaching at Brooklyn New School and then Brooklyn Friends. She joined the MS442 staff in 1998 as an English and Social Studies teacher.

Ryan Daley

Mr. Daley earned a B.A. in Spanish from Mount Saint Mary's College and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Brown University. In graduate school, Mr. Daley explored the possibilities of creating literature out of "disposable writing." (In other words, he studied spam email.) He has one published book and one chapbook of poetry, and is currently working on a long (2+ years and running) serial collection of poetry based on weather. His translations have appeared in The Harvard Review, and he sometimes serves as an editorial consultant for the National Council of La Raza in Washington, DC. At MS 442, Mr. Daley co-teaches 6th grade Social Studies and teaches 7th and 8th grade Spanish. When not in school, Mr. Daley enjoys reading, bike riding, playing the trumpet, social justice, and coffee. A current New York City Teaching Fellow, Mr. Daley is earning his M.S.ED. in Secondary Spanish Education at City College (CCNY).

David Bruder

Mr. Bruder attended the University of Central Florida in Orlando and majored in English/Creative Writing. After college, he spent two years abroad in Peace Corps serving as a Youth Development Volunteer in Ukraine from 2009-2011. Upon returning to the states, Mr. Bruder spent time working in public schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida before deciding to move to New York in 2012. He recently graduated from Teachers College Columbia University with a M.A. in Secondary English Education. Mr. Bruder also coaches the Stinger's football and basketball teams.

Samuel Fetters

Mr. Fetters teaches 7th grade ELA. This is his first year at MS442. He moved to New York City for graduate school. He has taught formal and informal reading and writing workshops to students ages 6 to 86. He likes ice cream, running, reading and traveling.

Chris Marro

Mr. Marro grew up in northern Westchester County​​. Growing up with a forest in his backyard, Mr. Marro developed an intense curiosity for the natural world. As a high school student he competed in local science competitions and spent time interning at New York Medical College. At NYMC Mr. Marro became versed in the art of Microbiological research which ultimately led him to pursue a master's degree in Medical Microbiology. His research in the lab involved exploring ways to mitigate the effects of bacterial genes that confer multi-drug resistance. In other words, Mr. Marro found ways to defeat mutant bacteria! He is happy to now be teaching 7th Grade science at MS442 and hopes to impart his insatiable appetite for the natural world onto his students!

Brian Crowley

Mr. Crowley grew up on Long Island and went camping almost once a month for years. This time outside left him with a love of earth sciences, astronomy, and physics. After a brief adventure in academic philosophy, Mr. Crowley jumped tracks to teach younger students another way to think critically and carefully about the world around them: middle school science.

Brandon Johnson

Mr. Brandon was a corporate bankruptcy lawyer for several years before joining the New York City Teaching Fellows in 2015. In addition to teaching, he runs the specialized high school admission test prep group at the school. Mr. Brandon received his B.A. from the University of Vermont, his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, and his Masters of Teaching from Relay GSE.

Ed Oliva

Mr. Oliva is a fourth year math teacher at MS442, 7th grade team leader, IEP facilitator and New York City Teaching Fellow. In addition to teaching, he coaches the schools flag football, basketball, and soccer teams. Mr. Oliva received a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics from Fordham University and a Master of Education from St. John's University.

Matt Perron

Matt Perron has an undergraduate degree in Communications from Northeastern University and a graduate degree in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona. He has had 10 short stories published and is currently working on a novel. He has certifications in both English and Special Education. He started as the gym teacher at MS442 in 2002. While not at school he enjoys writing and the pursuit of the Martial Arts.

Damian T. Jones

Mr. Jones is a 3rd generation Brooklynite and has been an educator for 10 years. Directly out of high school, Mr. Jones served in the United States Armed Forces, where he worked as an allergy and immunology technician in the Air Force. Afterwards, Mr. Jones returned to school earning a Bachelor of Science in computer information systems. He never embraced the field, setting his sights on performing instead, which has always been his first love. While pursuing a career in acting, Mr. Jones traveled to many different places exploring different world cultures, where his love for traveling was born. His travels took him to Swaziland, a tiny country in South Africa, where he visited a school. Here is where the spark for teaching was born. He entered the New York City Teaching Fellows program soon after and earned a masters in education while beginning his life as a classroom teacher. During his leisure, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling of course (still having one continent he has yet to visit), he loves to dance, ski, and horseback ride.

Avery Ciarrocchi

Ms. Ciarrocchi earned a B.A. in English from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and is currently attending Brooklyn College to receive a Master's in English Adolescent Education. While living in Los Angeles, she taught 7th Grade Poetry at Orville Wright Middle School. This is her third year teaching 8th grade ELA at MS442. In addition to teaching ELA, Ms. C is also the 8th grade team leader, runs the Senior Committee Club and the Yearbook Club. In her free time she enjoys cooking, running, reading and drinking coffee.

Ken Andersen

Mr. Andersen earned a B.S. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University. He is a New York City Teaching Fellow and a candidate for a Master of Arts in Teaching at Relay Graduate School of Education. At MS442, Mr. Andersen teaches 8th grade science and Earth Science Regents. While not at school, Mr. Andersen enjoys running, riding a Citi Bike, and getting outdoors with the 5th Brooklyn Scouts.

Devin Silva

Mr. Silva studied history as an undergraduate at Princeton University. He attained a Masters of Science in Education from Brooklyn College. This is Mr. Silva's 12th year as a New York City teacher and his second year with MS442. Outside of the school day, Mr. Silva devotes a great deal of his time to training new educators with the NYC Teaching Fellows. Mr. Silva has conversational French and Spanish skills. Beyond education, Mr. Silva enjoys spending time with his dog, cooking, and solving crossword puzzles.

Dennis Virga

Mr. Virga earned a B.S in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science from Pace University. He later earned a master’s degree in general education/special education from Touro College. Mr. Virga teaches 6th and 8th grade math here at MS442. He is a member of numerous charitable organizations around Brooklyn that help serve the youth.

Outside of the classroom Mr. Virga enjoys watching his beloved New York Yankees and New York Giants dominate their sports worlds. In the summer if you can’t find Mr. Virga with his yellow construction vest on he is most likely on the water enjoying his water sports.

Ms. Ford is one of the Guidance Counselors here at MS442. She is in her 5th year as a School Counselor and taught elementary school for 9 years. As an educator, she believes in meeting people where they are while encouraging them to always strive to be their personal best.

Susan Oh

Ms. Oh earned a B.A in Speech Communication with a concentration in Media Studies from Pace University in New York City. During her studies at Pace, she had an opportunity to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, France which enhanced her love of language learning. Upon graduating, she began a career in travel/hospitality which then lead to various opportunities in marketing, promotions and public relations. During this time, she began volunteering at an organization called the International Center (NYC) and taught graduate students/adults to improve their "business" English and supported academic studies. This sparked an interest in teaching children who were English language learners. At MS442, Ms. Oh is the English as a New Language (ENL) teacher and works with all English Language Learners (ELL) and supports their English acquisition in all areas of learning. During her free time, she enjoys exploring new neighborhoods and cities, food crawls around the boroughs and catching up on missed movie releases.

Sultana Jasmeen

Mrs. Sultana earned a B.S.S and M.S.S in social science from Chittagong University in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Shortly after Sultana trained and worked as a Medical Assistant here in Brooklyn, New York. Now at MS442, Ms. Sultana is a paraprofessional assisting 6th graders and also assists students in other grades and other faculty. While not in school, Mrs. Sultana loves spending time with her family and enjoys cooking for them.
